Burns Smith Law Attorney Robert Connor Wins Full Acquittal in Cherokee County Aggravated Assault Jury Trial
Jury returns verdict of not guilty on all counts after four-day trial in Cherokee County Superior Court
CANTON, Ga., Oct. 23, 2026 — Burns Smith Law, P.C. announced today that Attorney Robert Connor secured a full acquittal for his client in a jury trial in Cherokee County Superior Court. After a full day of deliberation, the jury found the client not guilty on all counts, including Aggravated Assault under O.C.G.A. § 16-5-21.
Aggravated Assault is a felony in Georgia carrying a potential sentence of one to 20 years in prison. The State brought the case to trial on Oct. 19, 2026, before Judge Cannon, and the jury returned its verdict on Oct. 22, 2026.
“My client faced the possibility of years in prison and a felony record that would have followed him for the rest of his life,” said Connor. “The jury listened carefully to all of the evidence and held the State to its burden of proof. We are grateful for their service and thrilled that my client can now move forward with his life.”
The verdict reflects the firm’s commitment to trying cases when the facts call for it. “Robert prepared this case relentlessly and was ready to take it all the way to a verdict,” said J. Daran Burns, Founding Partner of Burns Smith Law, P.C. “This result is exactly why clients trust us when everything is on the line.”
