Do's and Dont's During a Divorce

While going through a divorce, people are often not on their best behavior. Often, people say or do things that later harms their ability to get an optimal outcome in their divorce. This is especially true when it comes to matters of child custody and spousal support. We offer this list as a reminder of items that can be overlooked.

DO’s

  2. Change your passwords on your email or other accounts to which your spouse typically has access.
  3. Consider recording conversations with your spouse if you feel he/she will present differently in public than in your home
  4. Consult with an experienced attorney prior to any video or audio recording to ensure compliance with State laws.
  5. Prepare a budget and consider financial issues after your divorce.
  6. Keep an eye on your spouse’s social media and print anything you think may be relevant.
  7. Keep a diary of events.

DON’T's

  1. Post anything on social media; Do watch and copy and/or print anything you think may be relevant that your spouse has posted.
  2. Before making any lifestyle changes you should consult with an attorney.
  3. Involve your children in any divorce issues.
  4. Start any new relationships while in the process of divorce.
  5. Don’t make efforts to hide or move property, finances, etc.
